Happy Birthday from Pooh and Piglet!

Pooh and Piglet are here wishing my son a happy birthday at another first birthday party! These were my first fondant figures. The classic-looking Pooh and Piglet were fun to make. They sat on top the white chocolate whisper cake with lemon filling and vanilla buttercream.

Hungry? How about some spaghetti and meatballs and some blueberry pie for dessert?
The pasta is vanilla cupcakes covered with buttercream icing (tip#3) and chocolate truffles drizzled with strawberry preserved. The pies are lemon cupcakes covered with blueberry preserves and buttercream crust.

The idea for the pasta is from the book, "Hello, Cupcake" and the pie is from Wilton's "Cupcake Fun".

Bees!

A colleague in the entomology department is retiring. Who better than an apiologist (who studies bees) would enjoy a bee cake? This was my first carved cake. The bee cake design came from Debbie Brown. The cake is lemon covered in fondant including the bees and flowers. The cupcakes are also lemon with buttercream with fondant bees. The cupcakes design came from a fantastic decorater (Twinsline7) from CakeCentral.

Here are some more pictures of the cake and cupcakes before they headed to the party.

Happy St. Patrick's Day

You can't celebrate St. Patrick's Day without Guinness or Bailey's Irish Cream. So why not add them to cupcakes? The knotwork was done with royal icing. The green knot cupcakes are dark chocolate with Bailey's Irish Cream buttercream icing. The gold knot cupcakes are Guinness chocolate with cream cheese icing.

These were my second try at royal icing decorated sugar cookies. I still need to work on my piping skills, but the knots were fun!

Purple, Purple, Purple

These are 2 of 4 cupcakes I made as a congratulation gift for a friend opening her new business. It was a good chance to try out some new skills including using my new impression mat on the fondant and making my first buttercream rose. The cupcakes are devils food cake.
